First Grade Curriculum
Morning Routine:
Pledge, prayer, calendar and penny in a can (to count number of days)
Religion:
-Daily lesson, attend Mass once a week
-Plan and participate in Mass with kindergarten
-Make holiday cards for residents of Bethlen Home
Language Arts:
-Phonics, spelling and English
-Reading and writing are integrated
-Phonics: long and short vowels, sounding out of words and word endings
-Spelling: words are related to phonics skills that the children are learning
-English: nouns, verbs and adjectives
-Reading: 2 stories a week, one using new phonic skills and one using new vocabulary and comprehension skills
-Writing: practice Denelian letters
Math:
-Adding and subtracting, time, place value to 100, money and measuring, graphing and collecting data, comparing numbers, patterns, solid and plane figures and fractions
Science/Health/Social Studies (with monthly themes)
-Friendship, colors, apples and Johnny Appleseed, pumpkins, Thanksgiving and pilgrims, gingerbread and the five senses, penguins, Martin Luther King, Jr., Groundhog Day, Presidents Day, dental health, map skills, healthy habits, butterflies and plants.
Special Classes:
-Twice a week: gym and French
-Once a week: art, music, library, Happy Healthy Heart Club (with kindergarten and second grade)
