Seventh Grade Curriculum
Religion:
Students study the life of Jesus. They become more proficient using the Bible, studying the liturgical seasons and feast days, and planning Masses. Prayer is a large part of the curriculum as well as questions concerning the teachings of the church.
Math:
Students study independent and dependent variables and their relationship as well as similarity in geometric figures using scaling, ratios, fractions, percent, surface area and volume. Integers and their operations are introduced with 4-quadrant graphing. Linear relationships, slope, intercepts, and writing equations and systematic solving of them are also covered. Probability and critical thinking skills are included, and Accelerated Math is used to reinforce basic skills and learn advanced skills.
Life Science:
Students are challenged to examine cellular structure, DNA and the many variables that impact plants and animals. The history of life on earth is researched and debated. The scientific method is employed to provide structure for lab experiences. Students participate in the annual science fair, and they dissect an animal and identify body parts.
Geography (Eastern Hemisphere):
Students explore the other side of the world through texts, travelogues, map making, videos, written reports (paper or PowerPoint), models of landmarks that exhibit a country’s culture and Internet sites. Current events are included to promote interest in unfamiliar locations. Students gain multicultural awareness through the use of Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines.
Language Arts:
This is an integrated study of all communication skills. Students participate in a vocabulary workshop, which is an intensive study of grade-appropriate words, to enhance communication skills. Spelling is also a grade-appropriate instruction based on patterns and principles that develop spelling skills. Students apply the writing process to various modes of writing while integrating grammar. The computer lab greatly enhances the writing program. Grammar instruction is very comprehensive at this level, while writing is expanded to essays and research. Literature consists of studying short stories, poems and novels. Special consideration is given to characters, action, setting, style, theme and the blending of these components. Students are also required to meet established goals within the Accelerated Reader program.
Computer:
Students learn file server usage, log in with password, ethical considerations and Internet usage for research and class projects. Students also practice word processing, spreadsheets and graphing using Microsoft’s Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint.
