Extracurricular Activities at Holy Trinity School
Student activities can be divided into two categories: academic and artistic.
Academic activities include participation in many writing contests throughout the year. The largest of these is the Woodman Essay contest which is open to students in grades 5-8. The upper grades also participate in the St. Francis Spelling Bee and the Diocesan Spelling Bee. Our junior high students also participate in MATHCOUNTS, a math competition, and our grade 8 students produce the annual yearbook.
Artistic activities include the artist in residence program in conjunction with SAMA (Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art). Students spend two weeks during the school year with an artist working on a project for the school. There are also art classes where SAMA artists bring in several paintings with a similar theme to discuss with the students. They show the students different ways to draw and allow them to practice.
Our art teacher holds an art fair each year to raise money for the art program. Student work is proudly displayed during this event. At the same time, our French teacher holds a French Café to help raise money for the French program. Students dress as French waiters and waitresses to help out. Student art work is also displayed at a student exhibit at SAMA and through the year at the town hall in Ligonier. The younger students participate in the American Legion coloring contest, and all students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of art and poster contests throughout the year. One student recently had the winning design in a T-shirt contest for the local community.
Our students are fortunate to be given the opportunity to see a number of plays each year. The Hollow Tree Players, a local group, perform two plays each year which are primarily geared toward the younger students. Older students attend musicals at Valley School and Greensburg Central Catholic High School.
The Knitting Club is a new project. Students learn how to knit and make hats for patients at Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh. The students quickly learn, and by the end of the year, they typically deliver about 50 hats to the patients.
